As higher autonomous driving levels, such as L3, are more and more present on the roads, relevant steering systems are undergoing significant changes. Mechanical connections between the steering wheel and steering gear are no longer required with “steer-by-wire”, as signals are transmitted electronically. Adjustable steering columns not only improve driving ergonomics, but also facilitate completely new interior concepts: If not needed, the steering wheel can be stowed, re-purposing the driver’s cabin space.
