Motion Sickness Forecast & Mitigation System

With the popularization of autonomous driving, the demand for motion sickness prevention is steadily growing. Motion sickness causes discomfort and discourages occupants from reading, working or engaging in entertainment in the vehicle. Enabling occupants to continue their activities during travel has become a key research topic for enhancing the ride experience. To address this, Toyota Boshoku is developing an anti-motion sickness seat system to reduce discomfort and deliver a smoother, more comfortable ride.

This system predicts motion sickness risk in real time and actively cools the neck before discomfort occurs. Leveraging the neck’s high temperature sensitivity, it effectively suppresses dizziness.
Tested on 39 motion-sickness-susceptible individuals, this system extended motion sickness tolerance time from 20 minutes to 57 minutes, nearly a threefold increase.
