Together with Italian helmet manufacturer AIROH, Autoliv has studied and developed a concept of a motorcycle helmet with an integrated airbag. Autoliv’s testing shows that the peak linear head acceleration and hence skull fracture risk can be reduced substantially through this incorporation of airbag technology.
The goal was a helmet with low mass and attractive design that, when needed, can expand and provide the rider with protection far beyond current state-of-the art motorcycle helmets. A development boundary being that in situations when the airbag is not deployed the helmet should still meet all the usual safety requirements and provide the rider with levels of protection expected from a conventional helmet.
A prototype helmet with an integrated airbag demonstrated that protection improvements could be reached without critically compromising the design, weight or comfort.
