VW China Launches ID. UNYX 07 Based on Its First Zonal Electronic Architecture

Volkswagen Group China zonal electronic architecture

Volkswagen Group China successfully delivered the China Electronic Architecture (CEA) on schedule, enabling the rollout of its first CEA-based model, the VW ID. UNYX 07. This milestone marks the Group’s entry into full-cycle Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) production in China. The Group has already announced four additional vehicles from various Volkswagen brand joint ventures that will adopt this new architecture later this year. The delivery of the CEA confirms Volkswagen’s comprehensive SDV development capabilities, covering everything from concept and engineering to validation and mass production. The architecture was co-developed by Volkswagen Group China Technology Company (VCTC), CARIAD China, and XPENG, with the vehicle manufactured at the Volkswagen Anhui plant.

The China Electronic Architecture is a zonal electronic and electrical system featuring high-performance central computing. Designed to be scalable and continuously upgradable, Volkswagen Group China is the first automaker to implement a zonal architecture across multiple vehicle platforms and powertrain types, ranging from full electric vehicles to hybrids and combustion engine cars.

Compared to previous generations, the CEA reduces the number of electronic control units by approximately 30%, significantly simplifying system complexity. This architecture provides a stable foundation for advanced AI cockpit functions, China-specific driver assistance systems, and full-vehicle over-the-air updates.

The new development process enabled by the CEA shortens overall vehicle development cycles by up to 30%. Localized development and early supplier integration during the concept phase reduce development costs by up to 50% for selected key projects. This agile development approach also allows rapid adjustments to evolving customer requirements, strengthening Volkswagen’s competitiveness in China’s Intelligent Connected Vehicle era.
