PersiSKIN makes use of the surplus persimmon harvest not destined for agri-food channels for the generation of vegetal skin. Spain is the leading producer of this fruit in Europe and the second largest in the world, with an annual production of around 500,000 tons, of which only half reaches the consumer. The use of production waste would therefore add the benefit of production at source (kilometer zero) to other environmental advantages for a vegan, ecological, and truly sustainable solution.
Unlike other alternatives to leather-based on the use of agri-food waste or by-products, the PersiSKIN solution allows the integration of more than 75% of organic vegetable content in the material. Thanks to the close collaboration with a tier-1 supplier, as Antolin, it is expected to meet the requirements demanded in the automotive sector and adapt the solution to the manufacturing processes of interior components.
This collaboration in innovation will make it possible to offer car brands a sustainable alternative to animal skin, reducing chemicals products and water consumption. In this way, it will be possible to offer alternatives to synthetic fur and other bio-based products.
PersiSKIN and Antolin are working to make full use of the waste and surplus from the production of persimmon, substantially reducing the environmental impact derived from agri-food activity, to create this natural, ecological, vegan, and mainly bio-based coating of vegetable origin, to adapt it to the automotive sector.
