The power inverter is mounted directly to the motor housing to ensure HV safety and avoid the need for unnecessary HV cables. The inverter design is extremely compact and provides a direct connection, from the power stages output to the motor winding, by means of bus bars, with a design optimized for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and safety.
The motor on the shaft assists in accelerating the E-Turbo using electrical energy from the traction motor or stored in the battery. The E-Turbo speed rises rapidly, and boost is delivered immediately. Due to the compounding effect of engine power from fuel energy, the electrical energy consumed from the E-Turbo in such assist is significantly less than the traction drive would consume to produce the same effect in the vehicle. This allows the use of smaller traction drives and HV batteries, keeping the vehicle weight down
